Soft Wind (2013)

O R D E R O N L I N E
Early on in my Career, I was unsure of what made a good Photograph because it was based on how others reacted to it. For example, when I shared "Soft Wind" with Photography teachers, their first reaction was: "The horizon line is off." Photography 101, you cannot have a crooked horizon line.
With that in mind, this Photograph was shown less and less. Until one day, someone came across this Scene on my website and it Sold. It was their absolute favorite. Message after message came in of people complimenting this Capture.
Of course, I had to ask myself: "Do they not see the horizon line is a little off?" Yes, I asked. Yes, a few of them noticed. Yes, they purchased it anyway or saved the link to their Favorites Folder.
Does this mean we shouldn't care about Capturing the horizon line perfectly straight? Of course not. Lesson learned. I was more careful about it moving forward. However, I did begin to understand that what draws people to your Work is not merely because it's technically sound.
Captures like "Soft Wind" can trigger fond memories. They can instill moments of joy to those who are going through dreary days. They can pull Viewers into the Moment and inspire them to find this type of scene in their own Life.
I am amazed that over ten years later, someone can still come along, see "Soft Wind" for the first time and think: "This is one of my favorites." While I do hope my more recent Captures become everyone's favorites, you can't control how people respond to your Work.
